Wild Flour Bakery in Freestone (near Sebastopol, California) on the Bohemian Highway sneaks up on you as you are driving toward the coast. The setting is pastoral and breath-taking and this little gem is situated right next to Freestone Vineyards (if you fancy a little wine-tasting). You will walk in and be pleasantly welcomed by a mountain of bread and other baked goodies that no one will be able to resist. It is one of those places you walk in for the first time and think, “Where have you been all my life?”
Ria’s excitement was palpable as she eyed the goodies – sourdough breads, scones (flavors like apricot, white chocolate, ginger or double chocolate, espresso, hazelnut), biscotti, sticky buns, cheese fougasse, goat cheese flat bread (super-duper yummy!) etc. The bakery works with a wood fired brick oven and that gives their breads a remarkable crusty exterior. They make about 900 loaves daily for sale exclusively at their bakery. If you want to make sure you are not left empty handed, show up around 10.30 am when the bread usually arrives. They make 10-12 different kids of breads daily and you can sample before you purchase. Grab a cup of coffee, milk for the kids, and enjoy gazing at the barns, open fields and herds of cows while you nibble on your treats.
The bakery also has a lovely garden which is perfect for exploring, and includes many flowers and a small fruit orchard. Children will love to play in it. This is the perfect summer break adventure if you want to get away with the kids, enjoy a little bit of the “country” and check out a phenomenal bakery. From there you can head to Point Reyes or Bodega Bay and enjoy California’s beautiful coastline.
